What it is:
This herb is the root of Angelica dahurica (Fisch ex Hoffm.) Benth. et Hook, or Angelica dahurica (Fisch ex Hoffm) Benth. et Hook f. var. for- mosana (Boiss.) Shan et Yuan(family Umbelliferae),grown chiefly in the pro- vinces of Zhejiang, Hubei and Liaoning, harvested in summer and autumn, sliced and dried in sunlight after cutting off the fibrous roots, and used unprepared.

Property:
Pungent in flavour, warm in property, acting on the lung and stomach channels.

Effects:
Inducing diaphoresis to dis- perse cold, expelling and removing dampness to stop leukorrhagia.

Used for:
1. Common cold due to wind-cold patho- gens manifested as headache,stuffy nose, etc. It is often used in combination with ledebouriella and notopterygium, as in Notopterygium Decoction of Nine Ingredients (Jiuwei Qianghuo Tang.

2. Headache, toothache, especially pain in the forehead and superciliary region. For headache due to pathogenic wind, it is often used with chuanxiong rhizome,chrysanthemum flower and ledebou- riella root, as in Chuanxiong Mixture (Chuanxiong Cha Tiao San). For headache caused by stuffy nose and rhinorrhea with turbid puruloid nasal discharge, it is often used with xanthium fruit and magnolia flower, as in Xanthium Powder (Cangerzi San). For toothache due to pathogenic wind-cold which is aggravated by cold air, it is used together with asarum; for toothache due to wind-fire which is aggravated heat, it is used with gypsum.

3. Various infecions on the body surface. For the treatment of acute mastitis, it is often used with tricho- santhes fruit, fritillary bulb and dandelion;for various kinds of sores and swellings,it is often used with honey suckle flower, tri- chosanthes fruit and other drugs.

4. Leukorrhagia. For patients with profuse clear and thin leukorrhea due to cold-dampness, this drug is often used with white atractylodes rhizome, poria and cuttle- bone;for foul yellow thick leukorrhagia due to damp-heat, it is used with phellodendron bark, plantain seed and other drugs.

5. Stomachache. It can be used with liquorice,named Deoction of Dahurian Angelica and liquo- rice (Baizhi Gancao Tang).

Dosage and admi- nistration: 3- 10g, decocted in water for an oral dose.

Precautions:
For the treatment of stomachache, the dosage of this drug can be increased to as much as 30g and reduced to the proper amount after relief of pain.
