Celandine
(Herba Chelidonium Majus)


 

What it is:
This herb is the whole plant of Chelidonium Majus distributed in Northeast China and the coastal region. The above ground part is collected in May, June and July when it flowers. It is put in a well-ventilated place and dried in the air.

Property:
Bitter and pungent in flavour, cool in property, poisonous.

Effects:
Clearing away heat, detoxication, relieving pain and cough, inducing diuresis and subduing swelling.

Used for:
1. Tumours of digestive system such as those of the esophagus, stomach, liver, gall bladder and rectum, and abdominal implantation.
(A) For stagnation of qi and blood and accumulation of toxin in Cancers of the esophagus and stomach, it is often used with clove, corydalistuber, scorpion, centipede, etc.
( B)For accumulation of dampness and heat, qi stagnation and blood stasis in the liver and gall bladder tumour, it is often used with Oriental Wormwood, capejasmine fruit, sunplant, plantain seed and others.
(C) For abdominal metastasis of various tumours in their middle and late stage, it is often used with coixseed, rhubarb and chonglou.
(D) It is reported in foreign literature that the herb extract is effective to rectal Cancer.

2. Chronic bronchitis, chin cough, stomach ache, gastritis, gastric ulcer, abdominal pain, diarrhea and ascites due to hepatocirrhosis.

3. External application for paddy field dermatitis, snake bite, scabies, tinea and wart.

Precautions:
It is a sedative in small doses, while an it excites in large doses.
