1. Overview and Causes

It is a very common disease of the urinary system in male. The common pathogens are staphylococcus, streptococcus, colibacillus, etc. It is often induces by excessive alcoholic drinking, injury of the perineum, excessive sexual intercourse.

2. Symptoms

a. There is a dull or distending pain in the perineum and inside of the rectum. The pain may radiate to the lumbosacral portion, the hip, thigh, testicle and the groin etc.
b. There is frequent and urgent micturition, pain in micturition and uncomfortable urination or a burning feeling in micturition.
c. At the end of urination or in moving the bowel, there is some sticky liquid dripping from the urethra disturbance of sexual function:
d. It is marked by sexual hypoesthsia ,impotence, prospermia, pain in ejaculation, hemospermia, nocturnal emission,etc.
e. Massage the prostate to collect prosthetic fluid; then, check it under the microscope.
f. In some severe cases, there are a lot of pus cells and more than 10 white cells present in each high power field.

4. Common Syndromes and Treatments in TCM

This ailment, according to TCM, has different syndromes. The treatment for these syndromes using herbal medicine and acupuncture is shown below.

Syndrome (a)
Stasis -stagnancy Type

The pain occurs at the perineal region, which can radiates to the testis and penis. Sometimes, there is low back pain or abdomen pain. The prostate gland becomes hard and smaller with the nodes. The tongue has white fur with ecchymoses. The pulse is thready and uneven.

To treat by Herbal medicine
Therapeutic principle: Promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis and promoting the flow of qi to remove stagnancy.

Prescription/Formula:
Decoction for prostatitis. Red sage root 10g, Lycopus herb 10g, Red peony root 10g, Green tangerine orange peel 10g, Dahurian adandelion ngelica root 10g, Dandelion herb 20g.

Syndrome (b)
Damp-heat type


There is frequent, urgent and painful micturition, a uncomfortable or a burning feeling in urination. At the end of the urination, there is some whitish and turbid secretion dripping from the urethra. There are the pus cells in the prostate fluid.The tongue is red with yellow greasy fur and pulse is slippery and rapid.

To treat by Herbal medicine
Therapeutic principle: Clearing away pathogenic heat and dampness to treat cloudy secretion coming from the urethra.

Prescription/Formula:
Modified Pill of three wonderful Drugs Phellodendron bark 10g, Patrinia 10g, Atractylodes rhizome 10g, Achyranthes root, Oriental water plantain rhizome 10g.

Kidney-deficiency type


There are the fatigue,back and leg pain, insomnia, disturbance of sexual function,reddish tongue with little fur, thready and deep pulse.

Therapeutic principle: Warming the kidney, supplementing qi, removing and dissolving pathogenic dampness and heat.

Prescription/Formula: Modified Dr. Zhang Jingyue’s decoction for promoting Fertility. Curculigo rhizome 10g, Epimedium 10g, Chinese Yam 10g, Phellodendron bark 10g, Dandelion herb 20g.

5. Healing by Other Therapies

(a) Qigong and other therapies

Generally speaking, Qigong is good for healing effect of this specific ailment, however individual results may vary. It improves the flow of the qi and the circulation of the blood, so you'll experience more energy, but, you won't see/ feel any immediate effects, as with many exercises and therapies, it takes a few weeks or even months of practice before you'll see any significant improvements.

External Treatment: Soak and wash the bottom part of the body called sitz bath for 10-15 minutes With some certain herbs.
  

(b) Medicated diet
1) Anemarrhena Rhizome 15g, Phelledendron Bark 15g, Coix Seed 30g, Pork 2 pounds, 3 liters of water.
Cook them as the soup for a week supply; Take it once or twice day.

(c) Life style

1) Reduce the frequency of sex as much as you can so as to avoid the swollen and hyperemia of the prostate.
2) Drink 6-7 cups of water to clean up the urination.
3) Wear loose short or long pants.
4) Daily exercise will break down the channels' blockage on the lower body.
