1. Overview and Causes

Chronic Colitis is also called ulcerative colitis, which is associated with autoimmunity. The pathologic change attacks the rectum, sigmoid colon and descending colon.

2. Symptoms

a. Diarrhea with abdomen pain is the major symptom.
b. It is vary in the degree and the times. In severe cases, the diarrhea may occur more than 10 to20 times a day, accompanied with loose stool, mucous, bloody purulent and tenesmus.
c. The abdomen pain is often in the left, middle or lower part and pronounced before defecation and relieved after it.
d. The patients may have fever, anorexia, nausea, loss of weight, anemia, edema, etc.
e. The laboratory examination: barium enema shows colon spasm and deformity, disordered mucosal folds. In severe cases, rigid or dented colon wall, colon stenosis or ulcers can be found.
f. Endoscopy is convenient and the most valuable in the diagnosis since it can show the rectal involvement very well.

4. Common Syndromes and Treatments in TCM

This ailment, according to TCM, has different syndromes. The treatment for these syndromes using herbal medicine and acupuncture is shown below.

Syndrome (a)
Downward Flow of the damp-heat

Fever, abdomen pain, diarrhea, burning sensation in the anus, tenesmus, bloody, purulent and mucous stool, red tongue with yellow, thick and greasy fur and slippery rapid pulse.

To treat by Herbal medicine
Therapeutic principle: By using herbal medicine, you can clear away pathogenic heat and dampness.

Prescription/Formula: Decoction of pueraria, scutellaria and coptis with additional ingredients. Pueraria root 10g, scutellaria root 10g, coptis rhizome 10g, honeysuckle flower 20g, pulsatilla root 10g, plantain seed 10g, aucklandia root 10g, bitter orange 10g.

Syndrome (b)
Hyperactivity of liver and insufficiency of the Spleen

Attacks after emotional tonus, diarrhea, epigastric fullness and anorexia, thin and whitish coating of the tongue, taut thready pulse.

To treat by Herbal medicine
Prescription/Formula: Prescription of importance for diarrhea with pain with additional ingredients. White peony root 10g, white atractylodes rhizome 10g, ledebouriella root 10g, tangerine peel 10g, angerine peel 10g, bupleurum root 10g, coix seed 10g, hyacinth bean 12g, parched hawthorn fruit 12g.

Syndrome (c)
Insufficiency of spleen and stomach

Indigestion with diarrhea, blowing of the abdomen, pain, fatigue, pale tongue with whitish fur, and deep weak pulse.

Therapeutic principle: By using herbal medicine, you can reinforce the spleen and stomach.

Prescription/Formula: Modified powder of Ginseng, poria and bighead astractylodes. Dangshen 10g, lotus seed 12g, white astractylodes rhizome 12g, Chinese yam, hyacinth bean 12g, poria 10g, coix seed 10g, tangerine peel 10g, prepared licorice 10g.

Syndrome (d)
Insufficiency of the spleen-yang and kidney-yang

Diarrhea in the early morning, intolerance of cold, body pain pale and tender tongue with whitish fur, deep and thready pulse.

To treat by Herbal medicine
Therapeutic principle: By using herbal medicine you can warmin and and tonify the spleen and the kidney.

Prescription/Formula: Pill of four miraculous drugs with additional ingredients. Psoralea fruit 10g, nutmeg 10g, schisandra fruit 10g, evodia fruit 10g, prepared aconite root 10g, dangshen 12g, white atractylodes rhizome 12g, red halloysite 30g, prepared licorice root 6g.

Simple Prescription: Monkey Chinese date scatter powder each one bag, twice a day. Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi Tang at each one bowl twice a day.

5. Healing by Other Therapies

(a) Qigong and other therapies

Generally speaking, Qigong is good for healing effect of this specific ailment, however individual results may vary. It improves the flow of the qi and the circulation of the blood, so you'll experience more energy, but, you won't see/ feel any immediate effects, as with many exercises and therapies, it takes a few weeks or even months of practice before you'll see any significant improvements.

(b) Medicated diet
1. Chinese Yam (Shanyao) 30g, Lotus Seed (Lianzirou) 12g, Hyacinth Bean (Baibiandou) 10g, rice 60g, put 4 cups of water then soak for 20 minutes, boil for 30 minutes to make rice gruel, eat once a day for one month.
2. Dangshen 20g, Astragalus Root (Huangqi) 20g, lean pork 100g, with 4 cups of water to decoct 1-2 cups of soup to drink twice a week for 2 months.
(c) Life style
1. Don't eat raw, cold, or deep-fried food.
2. Take regular meals on time, avoid excessive food and/or drink at one meal.
3. Avoid mental stress and overstrain.
