1. Overview and Causes

Cholecystitis means inflammation of the gall bladder. Acute cholecystitisis due to bacterial infection, causing fever and acute pain over the gall bladder. Chronic cholecystitis is often associated with gallstones and causes recurrent episodes of upper abdominal pain.

2. Symptoms

1) Acute cholecystitis has an acute onset and persistent pain in the right upper quadrant radiating to the right shoulder accompanied with nausea vomiting and fever. Jaundice may be present in some patients.
2) Patients suffering from chronic cholecystitis usually have such chronic symptoms as discomfort in the right upper quadrant, vague pain, abdominal distension, aversion to greasy food.

3. TCM Effectiveness and Evaluation

Cholecystitis is successfully treated by TCM's treatment approach, specially in chronic cases. It may take about one or two months as a treatment cycle. In acute case the pain may be released by acupuncture within a week.

4. Common Syndromes and Treatments in TCM

This ailment, according to TCM, has different syndromes. The treatment for these syndromes using herbal medicine and acupuncture is shown below.

Syndrome (a)
Damp-Heat in the Liver and Gallbladder

Alternate spells of fever and chill or fever without chill, pain in the right upper abdomen or right ribs, poor appetite, bitterness in the mouth, even accompanied with nausea and vomiting, constipation, deep-coloured urine, sometimes with jaundice, red tongue with yellow and greasy fur, and taut rapid pulse.

To treat by Herbal medicine
Therapeutic principle: Clearing away pathogenic Heat and Dampness, soothing the Liver and normalizing the function of Gallbladder.

Prescription/Formula: Oriental Wormwood (Yinchenhao)30g, Capejasmine Fruit(Zhizi) 12g, Rhubarb(Dahuang) 9g, Scutellaria Root(Hunagqin) 15g, Bupleurum Root (Chaihu)15g, Curcuma Root(Yujin) 15g, Honeysuckle Flower(Jinyinhua) 30g, Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao)15g, Fentian Root (Longdancao)12g, Immature Bitter orange (Zhishi)9g, Aucklandia Root( Muxing)9g, Licorice Root(Gancao) 6g .

Qi Stagnation in the Liver and Gallbladder

Right-sided hypochondriac pain which sometimes radiates to the right shoulder and back, Epigastric distension and fullness, which are aggravated by anger or intake of greasy foods, poor appetite, eruction, nausea, red tongue with thin yellowish coating, and taut pulse.

Therapeutic principle: Soothing the liver and normalizing the function of gallbladder.

5. Healing by Other Therapies

(a) Qigong and other therapies

Generally speaking, Qigong is good for healing effect of this specific ailment, however individual results may vary. It improves the flow of the qi and the circulation of the blood, so you'll experience more energy, but, you won't see/ feel any immediate effects, as with many exercises and therapies, it takes a few weeks or even months of practice before you'll see any significant improvements.

(b) Medicated diet
1) Wolfberry Fruit (Gouqizi)20g Hawthorn Fruit (Shanza)20g, Chicken's gizzard-skin (Jineijin)10g, rice 60g, put 4 cups of water then soak them for 20 minutes, decoct for 30 minutes.to make gruel. Eat it once a day for 2 months..

(c) Life style
1) Avoid mental stress and overstrain
2) Avoid eating special food and deep-fried food. Be on a diet with less fat.
3) Pay attention to keep taking regular meals on time, avoid excessive food and /or drink at one meal.
