Acute
bacillary dysentery
1. Dysentery due to
Dampness and Heat
Abdominal pain, diarrhea with bloody mucous stool which is moved
several times with a small amount each time, tenemus, burning sensation
at the anus, scanty deep- colored urine, or accompanied with chill
and fever, yellow and greasy coating of the tongue, slippery and
rapid pulse.
To treat by Herbal medicine
Therapeutic principle: Clearing away heat and eliminating
dampness and regulating Qi to remove stagnancy.
Prescription/Formula: White peony root( Baishaoyao) 20g,
Coptis rhizome (Huanglian) 10g, Scutellaria root( Huang qin)10g,
Honeysuckle flower (Jinyinhua)30g, Portulaca (Machijian) 30g, Rhubarb(Dahuang)6g,
Aucklandia root(Muxiang)6g, Areca root(Binlaing) 10g, Bitter orange(Zhike)
10g Licorice root(Ganzao)6g
2. Dysentery due to Heat and Toxic
Sudden onset, violent attack, purulent and bloody stools, high fever,
restlessness or even coma or convulsion in serious cases, red tongue
or deep-red tongue with yellow and greasy coating and rapid pulse.
To treat by Herbal medicine
Therapeutic principle: Removing heat and Toxic and cooling
the Blood.
Prescription/Formula: Pulsatilla root(BaiTouwong)30g, Ash bark(Qinpi)15g,

stools, fatigue and tired, pale tongue with greasy coating, deep

Therapeutic principle: Invigorating the Spleen, replenishing
Qi, removing heat and eliminating dampness.
Prescription/Formula: (Dangshen)15g, White atractylodes rhizome
(Baizhu)10g, Poria(Fuling)15g, Aucklandia root(Muxiang)10g, Tangerine
peel( Chenpi)10g, Coptis rhizome (Huanglian) 10g, Pulsatilla root(BaiTouwong)20g,
Sanguisorba root(Diyu)15g,Prepared Licorice root(Zhigancao)6g.
2. Deficiency
of Yang
Chronic dysentery with watery and purulent stools, abdominal pain
with preference for warmth and pressure, cold extremities, loss
of appetite, listlessness, pale tongue with greasy coating, deep
and fine pulse.
To treat by Herbal medicine
Therapeutic principle: Warming and invigorating the Spleen
and kidney.
Prescription/Formula: (Dangshen)15g, White atractylodes rhizome
(Baizhu)10g,Baked ginger(Paojiang)10g, Cinnamon(Rougui)6g, Nutmeg
(Kezi)15g, Aucklandia root(Muxiang)6g, Red halloysite (Chishizhi)12g,
Prepared Licorice root(Zhigancao)6g.
