1. Cook Chinese Herbal Medicine by Decoction
The conventional method of applying herb therapy is to make a decoction
- a strong "tea" - of raw herbs by simmering them in water to extract
their substance. Traditionally, a special glazed clay teapot is used to
cook herbs, but a glass or stainless steel pot will do. The decoction
is drunk warm, and the amount not taken immediately can be refrigerated
and reheated as required (never in a microwave, though!). Because some
patients find this standard method too time consuming or unpalatable,
alternative applications - pulverized herbs in capsules, or "patent medicines"
- are available for those willing to sacrifice effectiveness to convenience.
In Traditional
Chinese Medicine, herbs are rarely prescribed singularly, but are
generally taken as a formula - a standard prescription may have 10-15
herbs with a history of treating a particular pattern of disharmony. Each
herb in the formula has a different role, and each is classified according
to its taste and temperature. Practitioners often adapt a basic formula,
adding other herbs to suit the patient's age, constitution and pattern
of disharmony.
The Chinese herbal
practitioner has a choice of nearly 6,000 herbs, a few mineral and animal
components, and hundreds of formulas.
Herbs are usually
used dried rather than fresh
2.

Chinese herbal granules are made from raw herbs. Through modern technology,
the herbal companies have improved the process of extraction, condensation.
