Deficiency
of the spleen-yang
and kidney-yang
Deficiency
of yang in the spleen and the kidney results in decreased mental
activity, a disinclination to talking, an aching pain around the
waist, a weakness in the legs, an aversion to cold, cold limbs,
loose stools, a pale complexion, scanty urine, nausea and vomiting.
There may also be a paleness in the tongue with a thin and white
fur. The pulse would be weak.
To treat by Herbal medicine

the spleen and warm the kidney
Prescription/Formula: Modified decoction for tonifying the
kidney-qi Dried rehmannia root (Gan Di Huang) 30g, Chinese yam (Shan
Yao)15g, dowgood fruit (Shan Zhu Yu)15g, oriental water plantain
(Ze Xie)10g, poria (Fu Ling )10g, moutan bark (Mu Dan Pi)10g, cinnamon
twig (Gui Zhi)6g , prepared aconite root (Pao Fu Zi)6g.

Syndrome

Insufficiency of
the liver-yin and kidney-yin
A patient suffering from a deficiency in liver and kidney yin may
suffer from vertigo (false sensation of imbalance and of the movement
of surroundings), tinnitus (ringing in the ears), deafness, nausea,
vomiting, weakness of the waist and knees, and a warm and feverish
sensation in the palm and the soles. He or she may also experience
a urine taste, or a dry bitter taste in the mouth. The tongue is
red with little fur, while the pulse is rapid.

Prescription/Formula: Modified decoction of six drugs including
rehmannia Prepared rhizome of rehmannia (Shou Di) 30g, dogwood fruit

water plantain (Ze Xie)10g, poria (Fu Ling) 10g, moutan bark (Mu

Retention
of water-dampness
within the body
A person with retention of water-dampness, and edema (swelling)
of body, pleural effusion (accumulation of fluid in the lung spaces),
ascites (accumulation of fluid in the abdomen), chest stuffiness,
shortness of breath, abdominal distension, nausea, vomiting, urine
taste in mouth, scanty urine or no urine, plump tongue, deep and
taut pulse.

Therapeutic principle: Excreting dampness and water.
Prescription/Formula: Modified decoction of tetrandra, pricklyash
seed, lepidium seed and rhubarb. Tetrandra root (Fang Ji) 10g, pricklyash

and replenishing qi and modified decoction of cinnamon twig and

Cao)6g, ginseng (Ren Shen)10g, Chinese angelica (Dang Gui) 10g,
cimicifuga (Sheng Ma )3g, bupleurum root (Chai Hu)3g, cinnamon twig
(Gui Zhi) 10g, poria (Fu Ling)10g, red peony root (Chi Shao)9g,
peach kernel (Tao Ren) 9g.
