Overview and Causes

The common cold
is caused by many kinds of viruses; influenza is one of them. This
disease is easily transmitted while in form of droplets. Sometimes,
pandemics may happen over the large areas of the world. In TCM the
common cold is known as “Shang Feng."

2. Symptoms
a.
There is a series of marked symptoms such as chills, headaches,
running nose, itching or sore throat, cough , myalgia (muscle pains)
and fatigue. In some cases, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting,
pain in abdomen and diarrhea also occur.
b. In severe cases, there is fever, chest pain, bloody sputum, shortness
of breath and even coma.
In one word, common cold is a disease caused by influenza viruses,
which are living in the respiratory system.

Common Syndromes and Treatments in TCM
This ailment, according to TCM,
has different syndromes. The treatment for these syndromes using herbal
medicine and acupuncture is shown below.

Syndrome
(a)
Wind-cold
syndrome
There
are a series of symptoms such as chills, absence of sweat, headaches,
running nose, cough, watery and thin sputum, aching in arms and
legs. Some people have diarrhea also. There is a thin and whitish
fur on the tongue and a tense pulse.
To treat by Herbal medicine
Therapeutic principle: By using herbal medicine, you can
relieve your exterior syndrome problem with the herbs pungent in
flavor and warm in property, ventilating the lung and expelling
pathogenic (disease causing) cold.
Prescription/Formula:
Schizonepeta 10g, ledebouriella root 10g, notopterygium root 10g,
bupleurum root, sichuan fritillary bulb 10g, cinnamon twig 6g, fresh
ginger 6g, prepared licorice root 6g.

To treat by Acupuncture and Moxibustion
Prescription/Formula:
Gb 20, Lu7, LI 4, Bl 12, St 8, SI 7, G b 7.
Pushing with one - finger meditation, pressing, kneading, wiping
and grasping, etc.

Syndrome

Wind-heat syndrome
Fever
with headaches, sore throat with congestion, cough with yellowish
sputum, thirst; reddened tongue with thin and yellowish fur, floating
and rapid pulse.
To treat by Herbal
medicine
Therapeutic principle: By using herbal medicine you can relieve
the exterior syndrome with the herbs pungent in flavor and cool
in property, promoting the dispersing function of the lung and clearing
up pathogenic heat.
Prescription/Formula:
Honeysuckle
flower 15g, forsythia fruit 10g, isatis root 15g, pueraria root
15g, platycodon root 10g, chrysanthemum, prepared Licorice root.
To treat by Acupuncture and Moxibustion
Prescription/Formula:
GB 20, Lu 7, LI 4, LI 11, Du 14.

(a) Qigong and other therapies

Generally speaking,
Qigong is good for healing effect of this specific ailment, however
individual results may vary. It improves the flow of the qi and
the circulation of the blood, so you'll experience more energy,
but, you won't see/ feel any immediate effects, as with many exercises
and therapies, it takes a few weeks or even months of practice before
you'll see any significant improvements.

(b) Medicated diet
1) Wind cold type: Ginger root 5 pieces, brown sugar one
tablespoon, 3 cups of water. Cook them for 5 minutes for two times
a day.
2) Wind heat type: Two Pears, Crystal Sugar two pieces, Two
liters of water. Cook them as the soup for two days supply; two times
a day.
(c) Life style
1)
Remember to wear enough clothing when the weather changes. Take care
not to catch cold or rain.
2) Have enough sleep.
3) Increase the circulation of air in the room. Don't go to the public
area often.
