Overview and Causes

Hyperthyroidism
is termed as an excessive activity of the thyroid gland and as a
result, an excess production of the thyroid hormones. It maybe caused
by increased growth of the gland, by the presence of a tumor or
due to Graves' Disease.

2. Symptoms
The
functions of thyroid are involved in so many vital process throughout
the body, including maintenance of body temperature, conversion
of food to energy, and regulation of growth and fertility. So, the
effects of an excess of the thyroid hormone are many or varied.
The symptoms of hypertyroidism are:
a. Anxiety with rapid heart beat, tremors, sweating and hot
feeling.
b. Weight loss despite increased appetite and food intake.
c. Bulging eyes is an important symptom in the Grave’s disease.
d. Itching skin with the texture of orange peel on the legs
and feet.
e. Significant elevation of the level of the thyroid hormone
in the blood can be detected.
f. The diagnosis can be further established by Ultrasound
of the thyroid gland and Radioactive Iodine uptake scan.

Common Syndromes and Treatments in TCM
This ailment, according to TCM,
has different syndromes. The treatment for these syndromes using herbal
medicine and acupuncture is shown below.

(a)
Hyperactivity
of Liver-yang
Nervousness
with intolerance to heat, sweating, palpitation (noticeable and
irregular heartbeat), bulging eyes, red tongue with thin yellow
fur, taut and forceful pulse.
To treat by Herbal medicine
Therapeutic principle: Calming the liver and decreasing hyperactivity
of liver-yang.
Prescription/Formula: Modified decoction of Gastrodia and
Uncaria. Gastrodia tuber 9g - tian ma
Hooked uncaria 15g - gou teng
Chrysanthemum flower 9g - ju hua
Scutellaria 9g - huang qin
Abalone shell 30g - sheng shi jue ming
Achyranth root 12g - niu xi
Prunella spike 15g - xia ku cao
Dragon’s bone 15g - sheng long gu
Raw oyster shell 30g - sheng mu li
Spiny jujube seed 12g - zao ren
Schisandra fruit 3g - wu wei zi
Arborvitae seed 10g - bo zi ren
Light wheat 10g - fu xiao mai.

To treat by Acupuncture and Moxibustion
Prescription:
Gb 20 feng chi, Extra 1 tai yang, Ht 7 sheng men, Lr 2 xing jian,
Gb 44 zu qiao yin, Li5 yang xi, St 41 jie xi.

Syndrome
(b)
Hyperactivity
of fire due to Yin deficiency
Anxiety,
insomnia, dizziness, feverish sensation in the palms and soles,
dry mouth, palpitation, amnesia (partial or complete memory loss),
sore back, red tongue with yellowish fur, thready and rapid pulse.
To treat by Herbal
medicine
Therapeutic principle: Nourishing Yin to clear away pathogenic
(disease producing) fire.
Prescription/Formula: Modified prescriptions of decoction
of Coptis and Donkey-hide Gelatin and Heart-tonifying Bolus.

White angelica 10g - bai shao
Schisandra fruit 3g - wu wei zi
Ophiopogon root 10g - madong
Coptis root 6g huang - lian
Spiny jujube seed 12g - zao ren
Fleece- flower stem 30g - ye jiao teng
Poria with hostwood 10g - fu shen
Red sage root 10g - prepared licorice root 6g
Drogen bone 10g - sheng long gu
Raw oyster shell 10g - sheng mu li
To treat by Acupuncture and Moxibustion

Pc5 jian shi, Pc4 que men, Ht 3 shao hai, Ht 4 ling dao, Sp 10 xue

Generally speaking,
Qigong is good for healing effect of this specific ailment, however
individual results may vary. It improves the flow of the qi and
the circulation of the blood, so you'll experience more energy,
but, you won't see/ feel any immediate effects, as with many exercises
and therapies, it takes a few weeks or even months of practice before
you'll see any significant improvements.

(b) Medicated diet
1) Coix seed 30g, hooked uncaria 15g, Chrysanthemum flower
15g, One Black chicken, Two liters of water. Cook it as the soup for
a week supply; Take it once a day.
(c) Life style
1.
Take more vegetable, fruit, and some food which is easy to digest.
2. Do not take any greasy or strongly flavored food.
3. Don't drink coffee, strong tea, or any alcohol.
4. Avoid mental stress and overstrain.
