Overview and Causes
|
Heart block
is a condition describing a failure in the conduction of electric
impulses in the heart and consequently, the slowing of the pumping
action of the heart. There are three degrees of heart block, the
Third Degree refering to complete heart block. Heart block is common
in elderly people as their hearts have undergone degenerative (wear
and tear) changes. However, it may also be cogenital (at birth),
or a result of some other heart disease such as Myocarditis (inflammation
of the muscle in the wall of the heart), Coronary thrombosis (sudden
blockage in the heart vessels), Cardiomyopathy (disease of heart
muscle), and Valvular heart disease (disease of the heart valves).
The result of compromised heart beat is decreased blood supply to
the vital body organs such as the brain,kidny and liver.

2. Symptoms
(a)
The patient suffers from dizziness, syncope (fainting), chest distress,
and angina pectoris (chest pain).
(b) The heart rate is usually less than 50 beats/min and the patient
can go into shock or even sudden death can occur.
(c) Provocative tests: Exercise tolerance test, Atropine test, Electrophysiological
study.

3. TCM Effectiveness
and Evaluation

TCM’s treatment approach is effective treatment for this condition.
It can regulate the heart rate to prevent dizziness, syncope, chest
distress, angina pectoris and even shock or sudden death.

Common Syndromes and Treatments in TCM
This ailment, according to TCM,
has different syndromes. The treatment for these syndromes using herbal
medicine and acupuncture is shown below.

Syndrome
(a)
Deficiency
of the Heart-yang and Kidney-yang
Chest
stuffiness, pain in the precordial (in front of the heart) region,
palpitation (noticeable and irregular heartbeat), shortness of breath,
dizziness, occasional fainting, fatigue and weakness, tinnitus (ringing
in ears), pain in the loins, aversion to cold, cold limbs, restlessness
and insomnia, pale thick or dark red tongue, thready, slow and uneven
pulse.
To treat by Herbal medicine
Therapeutic principle: Warming yang and replenishing qi.
Prescription/Formula: Modified prescriptions of Decoction
for Protecting Primordial qi and Decoction of Ephedra, Aconite and
Asarum. Prepared aconite root (Fu Zi) 6-20g, Red ginseng (Hong Seng)
10-30g, astragalus root (Huang Qi) 30g, Siberian solomonseal rhizome
(Huang Jin) 30g, Cinnamon twig(Gui Zhi) 10g, Ephedra (Ma Huang)
6-12g, Asarum herb (Xi Xin) 3g, Prepared liquorice (Zhi Gan Cao)
6-30g.

To treat by Acupuncture and Moxibustion
Prescription:
Shenmen (HT 7), Neiguan (PC 6), Xinshu (BL 15).

Syndrome
(b)
Deficiency
of both qi and yin
Chest
stuffiness, shortness of breath, vague pain in the precordial region,
dizziness, blurred vision, palpitation, insomnia, amnesia (memory
loss), perspiration, dry mouth, pale or dark red tongue with thin
and white fur, slow or thready pulse.
To treat by Herbal
medicine
Therapeutic principle: Supplementing qi and nourishing yin.
Prescription/Formula: Modified Decoction of Prepared Licorice
Prepared licorice root (Zhi Gan Cao) 30g, Dangshen (Dang Shen) 30g,
Astragalus root (Huang Qi) 30g, Siberian solomonseal rhizome (Huang
Jin) 30g, Dried rehmannia root Sheng Di Huang) 20g, Ophiopogon root
(Mai Dong) 15g, Sesame kernel (Ma Ren)12g, Cinnamon twig (Gui Zhi)
10g, Chinese-date (Da Zao)10 pieces, Schisandra fruit (Wu Wei Zi)
10g.
To treat by Acupuncture and Moxibustion
Prescription:
Shenmen (HT 7), Neiguan (PC 6), Xinshu (BL 15), Zusanli (ST 36),
Sanyinjiao (SP 6), and Taixi (K13).

Generally speaking,
Qigong is good for healing effect of this specific ailment, however
individual results may vary. It improves the flow of the qi and
the circulation of the blood, so you'll experience more energy,
but, you won't see/ feel any immediate effects, as with many exercises
and therapies, it takes a few weeks or even months of practice before
you'll see any significant improvements.

(b) Medicated diet
1)
Put Baical Skullcap Root (Huangqi) 20g into water to cook, then remove
the dregs and keeps the tea, add polished round-grained nonglutinous
rice (Jingmi) 50g, Ginseng Powder, Crystal Sugar (Bingtang) 15g, cook
them to make gruel. Take it in the morning and in the evening, one
dose a day,
(c) Life style
1)
Remain a cheerful mood.
2) Avoid strenuous exercise or physical activities.
3) Don't overeat. Make sure to have enough sleep.
4) Abstain from smoking, alcohol, strong tea and coffee.
5) Those who are severely sick should lie in bed to rest.
